FIFA Museum welcomes 1991 world champion Mary Harvey

Former goalkeeper Mary Harvey, who was ever-present in the USA’s run to glory at the maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup™, became the latest legend to add a pin to the FIFA Museum’s Wall of Champions.

Harvey was given an exclusive tour of the museum and particularly relished the chance to once again lift the trophy that she and her USA team-mates captured on 30 November 1991 by beating Norway 2-1 in Guangzhou, China PR. Likewise, as is traditional, she added a golden pin to the museum’s iconic Wall of Champions.

“The trophy is a lot heavier than I remember,” joked the former Frankfurt, Hammarby and Tyresö shot-stopper about the prize that was presented to the winners at the first two editions of the tournament before being replaced by the current FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy. “I remember the night we won it; it was incredible,” she went on.

Reminiscing on the groundbreaking tournament, she noted: “You didn’t know what to expect, because there’d never been a Women’s World Cup before. We’d never won anything before. The Europeans had the European Championship, but we didn’t have anything in the US. It was a hell of a journey to get there: we barely made it out [of the group stage] after our first game, against Sweden, and we had to play a lot of defence in the final.”

She went on to highlight how the battling spirit shown in that inaugural triumph both paved the way for the Stars and Stripes’ subsequent all-conquering success on the global stage and left a social legacy in the country.

Harvey also enjoyed admiring the many items in the women’s section of the FIFA World Cup Gallery, which was expanded last year. It features one showcase for each edition of the competition – including the 1991, 1999, 2015 and 2019 tournaments, all won by the USA.
