Three world champions visit at once!

FIFA World Cup winners Guido Buchwald (Germany, 1990), Paulo Sérgio (Brazil, 1994), and Christian Karembeu (France, 1998) visited the home of football history on Wednesday, 18 January 2017. After being given a tour of the collection and having posed for enough photos with other visitors, the former professionals were reunited with the original FIFA World Cup Trophy – on permanent display in the museum – and signed the Wall of Champions.

After being reunited with the world’s most famous trophy, the World Cup winners took part in the third edition of the museum’s German panel discussion event Anpfiff alongside New Zealand legend and Oceania’s Player of the Century Wynton Rufer. The former players discussed what it takes to become a champion before answering questions from an audience of over 100 people – including Greece's 2004 European Championship-winning coach Otto Rehhagel.

As well as being a World Cup winner in 1998, Karembeu won the 2000 UEFA EURO Championships and the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup with France. Paulo Sérgio won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994 and the UEFA Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2001. Buchwald was a World Cup winner with Germany in 1990 and played a key role in the Final of that tournament after he effectively marked Argentina's star player Diego Maradona out of the game. It was a performance that earned him the nickname "Diego" in his home country.

We conducted small interviews with the world champions after they had toured the museum, you can hear from them and see how they got on below.
